10 Things You Didn’t Know about the 2018 Rolls-Royce Wraith

Back in its day, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was the company’s flagship model. Its timing was pivotal in reshaping how people viewed the Rolls-Royce brand—an impact still felt today. Here are 10 facts you might or might not know about the Silver Cloud:

1. It Replaced the Silver Dawn

Before the Silver Cloud, Rolls-Royce’s entry-level model was the Silver Dawn, produced from 1949 to 1955. Notably, the Dawn was the first Rolls-Royce to come with a factory-built body.

2. It Could Feature Custom Coachwork
Built on a separate chassis (“body-on-frame”), the Silver Cloud lent itself to bespoke coachbuilding. While some buyers commissioned one-off bodies, most opted for the standard coachwork supplied by a British coachbuilder that Rolls-Royce acquired in 1965.

3. It Transformed the Brand’s Image
Prior to the Silver Cloud, Rolls-Royce was largely seen as a marque for the British aristocracy. When high-profile celebrities began buying Clouds, the brand’s appeal broadened, opening new luxury-car market segments—a legacy that endures today.

4. The Silver Cloud II Had Minimal Styling Changes

Visually, the Silver Cloud II looked much like its predecessor. Underneath, however, it boasted a new engine. Though it delivered better performance, some felt its ride wasn’t quite as smooth.

5. It Was Superseded by the Silver Shadow

In 1965, Rolls-Royce introduced the Silver Shadow, which went on to become the company’s highest-volume model, with production lasting until 1980.

6. Silver Cloud

Between 1955 and 1966, a Silver Cloud sold for about £5,000. Adjusted for inflation, that sum could buy a 12-bedroom house in England—underscoring just how extraordinarily expensive the Cloud was in its day.

7. Celebrities Were Among Its Owners

Elvis Presley bought a Silver Cloud in 1960, adding it to his Rolls-Royce collection. Frank Sinatra and John Lennon also owned Clouds. Such celebrity endorsements influenced other luxury-car buyers.

8. Silver Cloud I, II, and III

In total, there were three Silver Cloud variants—Silver Cloud I, II, and III—each one refining its predecessor with lessons learned along the way.

9. The Silver Cloud III Received Broader Updates

The Cloud III featured slightly adjusted exterior dimensions, a redesigned interior and upgraded engine—making it the most evolved of the three.

10. Rolls-Royce Never Disclosed Its Engine Power

Even after reworking the Cloud’s engine, Rolls-Royce refused to publish official horsepower figures, fueling plenty of speculation among enthusiasts at the time.
