5. 1921 Leyat Helica

When the 1921 Helica first appeared, newspapers dubbed it “the airplane without wings.” Designed by French automaker Marcel Leyat, this extraordinary vehicle is powered not by a conventional engine but by a massive airplane-style propeller. Despite Leyat’s ongoing development, only 30 were ever built—its unconventional looks and high-speed risks limited production. Today, every surviving Helica resides in a private collection.

4. Talbot-Lago Grand Sport

Talbot’s automotive journey (1903–1994) was marked by changing ownership—Peugeot, Chrysler and more—and an 18-year hiatus (1960–1978) when no cars bore its name. Known for everyday models and even Formula 1 entries (and as the inaugural 1981 World Rally Championship winner), Talbot’s crowning achievement is the Grand Sport. Launched in 1948 with both racing and luxury variants, only 12 of the opulent Grand Sports were made, making them incredibly sought after by collectors.

3. Porsche 916

Often called Porsche’s hidden gem, the 916 is the marque’s rarest model and one of the rarest cars globally. Built in 1972, all 11 examples were prototypes. Priced at $14,000—well above the $11,000 911 of the same year—Porsche canceled the project, fearing it wouldn’t sell. At the time, the 916 was Porsche’s fastest, lightest car, topping out at 233 km/h. For Porsche enthusiasts, it remains a tantalizing “what might have been.”

2. 1969/1970 Dodge Hemi Coronet R/T Convertible

With just four ever produced—two in 1967 and two in 1970—this Hemi-powered Coronet convertible ranks among the rarest American muscle cars. Visually, it’s nearly identical to the standard Coronet, but its 426-cubic-inch Hemi V8 and minuscule production run have made it legendary among collectors.

1. 1904 Rolls-Royce 15 HP

Topping the list is the 1904 Rolls-Royce 15 HP—the first automobile by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, crafted in Manchester. Of the six built, only one survives, now a star attraction at museums and classic-car events worldwide. Its name simply denotes its engine’s power—impressive for the early 20th century—and it could reach 62 km/h, laying the foundation for a century of Rolls-Royce luxury.
