The Engagement Ring: Its History

24 July 2019
The engagement ring began simply as a small band—just a few grams placed on the left ring finger, right over the vein believed to run straight to the heart. Among the ancient Visigoths and Germanic tribes, it served as a seal on the marriage contract. Even earlier, this commitment was symbolized by an apple.

In 1477 that humble fruit transformed into the first diamond ring when Archduke Maximilian of Austria presented Mary of Burgundy with a gold band topped by a brilliant-cut diamond. The custom of gifting a solitaire as a pledge of betrothal took hold so firmly that today roughly 70% of brides-to-be receive one as a promise of marriage.

Mending a Broken Heart

What if the engagement is called off? Etiquette dictates that letters and tokens be returned by both parties. Yet if he is the one to break things off, she is traditionally allowed to keep the ring—her only consolation for an abandoned heart.

Floral Decorations

Once upon a time an engagement ring was a treasured family heirloom, passed down from father to son, through many generations. That tradition has largely faded; now couples typically purchase a brand-new piece. Whether you choose a solitaire, a riviera, a trilogy or another design—and no matter which gemstone you favor—each style carries its own unique meaning. Diamonds stand for strength and permanence; rubies, for passionate love; sapphires, for loyalty; emeralds, for hope; opals, for sincere affection; beryl, for unity; and aquamarine, for a happy, enduring future.

The Four C’s

When selecting a diamond, remember Carat (weight—in which 1 carat equals 0.2 grams), Colour (graded D through Z), Cut and Clarity. A qualified gemologist must examine the stone under ten-power magnification in normal lighting to ensure it’s free of internal flaws. Only then is it considered top quality. If your budget is tight, prioritize cut and color over absolute clarity. Alternatively, you might purchase a loose, unset stone so you can fully appreciate its form, then choose a setting you customize to her taste.

Certificate of Authenticity

Never buy a gemstone without an official certificate confirming its essential characteristics. If you’re new to this world, turn to friends or family for recommendations and bring someone knowledgeable with you. Make sure your jeweler offers a right of return or exchange, in case the ring—for any reason—doesn’t delight her completely.
Good form holds that once the wedding band is worn, the engagement ring moves to the right hand—but many brides prefer to keep both rings on the same finger, a lasting testament to a love meant to endure.
