The Rolls-Royce Wraith is one of the crown jewels of Ghisu Car Rental in Rome, and it comes with a truly fascinating history.
This particular vehicle once belonged to William Somerset Maugham, the renowned British writer and playwright, famous for the pessimism and biting irony of his works. He made it truly one of a kind by having it personally customized by James Yang, the official Rolls-Royce designer for Her Majesty the Queen!
Some of the unique modifications by James Yang include:
• Left-hand drive (quite unusual for the UK),
• A built-in writing desk tailored to Maugham’s needs,
• Velvet rear seats instead of leather,
• An electric glass divider between the driver and passengers,
• And footrests — all of which are still present and exactly as originally installed by Rolls-Royce.
Fun fact: The Wraith is the most featured car from our rental fleet in the film industry.
Historical note: It was the first model produced after manufacturing was suspended due to the outbreak of World War II. At the time, the British automaker only provided the chassis and mechanical parts, while the bodywork was commissioned and built separately by the buyer.
