Indestructible, bomb-proof!
Stepping into Ghisu Car Rental’s garage — lined with Rolls-Royces, limousines, and Bentleys — you might be struck by a vehicle that, to many, outshines them all in sheer iconic value. We’re talking about the legendary Beetle, a car that shaped automotive history and left its mark on both cinema and high-society culture.
The Beetle holds records unlikely to be broken: it’s the longest-selling car model ever (production in Mexico continued until 2003) and the best-selling single model in history, with 22 million units sold.
Its story began in Germany when Hitler decreed that automobiles should no longer be a luxury reserved for the wealthy. He commissioned Ferdinand Porsche to design the “Volkswagen,” or “people’s car,” and set up the factory in Wolfsburg — where production ran until 1974, giving way to the Golf.
The first Beetles debuted at the 1939 Berlin Auto Show, and during World War II, civilian Beetle production was converted to military vehicles, which proved themselves under the toughest wartime “tests.”
Even today, many of those 22 million Beetles still cruise our roads. The Beetle defined an era and will undoubtedly be enshrined in future automotive history — its records will be hard to beat.
Finally, alongside the Fiat 500, it boasts one of the largest and most devoted followings of any car in the world.
