Honeymoon in Singapore

19 November 2019
One hundred fifty-two kilometers—that’s the distance between the Equator and Singapore, the island at what feels like the “end of the Earth.” It’s one of the world’s most fascinating metropolises: cosmopolitan, opulent, and crowded with people of diverse origins—Chinese, Malay, Indian, Asian, European—and, believe it or not, the highest concentration of millionaires per capita on the planet, outpacing Hong Kong, Switzerland, Qatar, and Kuwait. At its heart, sharing the same name, stands the fourth-largest financial center in the hemisphere, whose port ranks among the top five globally for activity and traffic.

Honoring the Kingdom of Singapura

Yet the “Lion City”—the literal meaning of its name—boasts more than just a role as a hub of priceless commerce. Singapore is also the Sabana that the second-century astronomer Claudius Ptolemy wrote about: a place of legends and colonial history. Desired and despised like a beautiful woman, it has evolved from a conquering outpost into a destination of dazzling facets. Here, ultramodern skyscrapers alternate with street corners that seem lifted from a bygone era. Wander its lanes and lose—or find—yourself, captivated by the countless attractions at the far end of the Malay Peninsula.

Between Myth and Reality

Legend has it that in 1299, the Srivijayan prince Sang Nila Utama, shipwrecked on the island of Temasek (the “Sea Town”) after a fierce storm, encountered a lion. Seen as a positive omen by the beliefs of the time, the sight prompted him to settle on the spot that had saved him. Thus was born the Kingdom of Singapura.

Savor It Slowly

Singapore shouldn’t just be raced through; beneath its frantic facade lies a more expansive dimension that gently slows the pulse and charms the senses. Take the Singapore Flyer, for example. This giant observation wheel—second in size only to Las Vegas’s High Roller—opened in 2008 to mark the Chinese New Year. On Valentine’s Day, its 28 cabins were reserved for couples, granting them a first rendezvous at 165 meters above ground. From that summit, the view stretches 45 kilometers, encompassing several Indonesian isles and southern Malaysia.

Captured from Different Perspectives

And what about rooftops? Authentic slivers of city appear before anyone who, from any number of atmospheric vantage points, seeks breathtaking panoramas. Some choose the Cable Car linking Singapore to nearby Sentosa Island; the more adventurous soar above the city in a private plane. Singapore Airlines, a byword for luxury, offers not just a seat but—believe it—a suite: a private enclave where travelers sip Dom Pérignon and savor lobster tartare, prime filet mignon, and chocolate-almond-apricot cake.

Unexpected Green Corners

The Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are the only tropical gardens in an urban setting outside Rio de Janeiro’s Tijuca Forest. Within its grounds the National Orchid Garden displays over a thousand species and two thousand hybrids, neighboring the ginger garden complete with an artificial waterfall. There’s also the Botany Centre, a concert stage, a swan lake…and two cutting-edge conservatories: the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. Designed as models of technological innovation and sustainability, they form the biological heart of Gardens by the Bay.

Indulgent Accommodations and Dining

To stay in Singapore is to indulge. Accommodations here never fail to amaze. A snapshot taken from the infinity pool at Marina Bay Sands has become the ultimate status symbol. The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, with its commanding presence, dominates the skyline; the Fullerton Hotel revives neoclassical elegance; and the Capella Hotel, set in its own lush grounds, reaches all the way to the sea. Dining is equally spectacular: from Corner House to Privé, from the Sunset Dinner Cruise across Singapore’s waters to 1-Altitude Gallery & Bar, perched 282 meters above sea level.
