The History and Evolution of the Ferrari California

The Ferrari California is a stunning sports car designed to echo the classic Ferrari lineage. Produced by the Maranello marque from 2008 to 2017, it was conceived as an entry-level model for buyers who couldn’t or didn’t want to pay for one of Ferrari’s more elaborate offerings. That said, no one should ever assume it’s any less deserving of admiration. The California introduced innovations unseen on most other Ferraris, making it not only worthy of ownership but uniquely thrilling to drive. Read on to discover how this remarkable car evolved from its debut until it was effectively replaced by the Portofino in 2018.

First Generation Ferrari California (2008–2011)

The inaugural California was engineered for easier handling compared with Ferrari’s more powerful models, and its higher ride height made getting in and out simpler—an important consideration for many buyers. Unlike Ferrari’s traditional mid-engine layout, it featured a front-mounted V8. It also boasted several Ferrari firsts: direct fuel injection, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, multi-link rear suspension, and a retractable hardtop roof that folded away at the touch of a button.

Key 2012 Upgrades

For 2012, Ferrari reworked the engine to boost output and tune in that unmistakable Ferrari soundtrack customers loved. The chassis was almost entirely aluminum, and an improved traction-control system with specialized dampers enhanced cornering stability. While buyers welcomed these refinements, a serious engine issue emerged that led to a recall before year’s end.

Model Year 2013

Aside from reverting to the original engine to eliminate the stalling problem, the 2013 California saw few changes. Unfortunately, this meant drivers missed out on the hoped-for power increase, and all affected 2012 cars had to return for engine replacements.

Second Generation Ferrari California (2014–2017)

From 2014 onward, the California received a comprehensive makeover for the 2016 and 2017 lineup. Expectations were met: a more potent engine, sleeker aerodynamic bodywork, and a fully redesigned interior featuring the latest infotainment technology. Production wrapped up in 2017, with the Ferrari Portofino taking its place in 2018. During its nearly decade-long run, the California earned a devoted following among drivers—and though it’s no longer made, it remains fondly remembered and will doubtless grace roads for years to come.
